What is a peptic ulcer
Peptic ulcer is a wound found in the stomach, esophagus or duodenum. Peptic Ulcer tends to affect the entire gastrointestinal activity, beginning from the mouth to the anus. Peptic ulcer suggests the involvement of hydrochloric acid and pepsin in the development of the disorder.
When gastric acid is produced in excess, the mucosal membrane that protects the stomach and internal organs from danger is damaged, enabling the bacteria Helicobacter pylori to penetrate the barrier and cause internal infections. Therefore, in the case of peptic ulcer, both gastric acid and bacteria are responsible for the development of the disorder. Leaving it untreated for far and way too long, it will result to a serious medical condition, and sometimes it results to death.
Causes
Research results indicate that smokers are exposed to a very high risk of developing peptic ulcers. Smoking increases the stomach’s production of digestive fluids, thus facilitating the occurrence of the disorder. Furthermore, smoking slows down the healing of existing peptic ulcers and increases the risk of complications. Similar to smoking, caffeine can also lead to an overproduction of pepsin and stomach acid, thus contributing to the occurrence of peptic ulcer.
There are many cause of stomach ulcer, and it could vary from patient to patient, although as studies 2012 in a school in America. They stated that it could be cause by some of the listed causes below.
